CALUMITE IBÉRICA S.A. is a Company that manufactures and sells Calumite®. A registered product that has been a long time used in the glass industry for the manufacture of float glass and container glass.

The plant is located in the vicinity of Gijón in Asturias and has a production capacity of 150.000 tons per year.  There is a covered store for 15.000 tons of blast furnace granulated slag as a guarantee of supply for all our customers.

Products can be shipped in bulk, either in silo truck or open truck or in big bag of different capacities 1500 kg or 2000kg.

There is a fully automatic installation for loading big bags that together with the proximity to the port of El Musel in Gijón allows exports of Calumite ® wherever there is a demand for our product.

Calumite Ibérica S.A. can also arrange with customers the possibility of packing in 25 kg bags if needed.

In Calumite Ibérica S.A. all the process is under control from the expedition of the granulated slag in the blast
furnace until the product is shipped from our premises.

All the process is automated with frequent checkups done by qualified personnel and all expeditions have a bulletin of analysis.

Our Company meets the quality requirements of ISO 9001 as well as the environmental ISO 14001.

What is Calumite®?

Calumite® is a high quality raw material used in the manufacture of glass.

It is a completely dry product, obtained from the granulated slag produced in the blast furnaces.

Its chemical composition very similar to glass makes Calumite® a good alternative to the use of cullets.

Uses of Calumite®

Calumite® in its two grades, float and container it is used for the manufacture of container glass ( bottles, jars etc ) and the production of float glass ( automotive, construction ).  It is also used in the manufacture of fiberglass.

The use of Calumite® will allow the manufacturer of glass reducing its environmental emissions, at the same time will save energy and will improve the quality of the glass.

  • A reduction in the emissions of Sox is obtained since the sulfur content of Calumite® allows glassmakers not to use sulfate plus carbon that generates more Sox emissions.
  • Since Calumite® has already been melt allows savings on CO2.
  • The glassy nature of Calumite® together with its chemical composition makes the melting in the furnace very fast. As a consequence there is less temperature needed in the furnace to melt the raw materials, therefore the efficiency of the furnace is increased, together with the life of the furnaces since it works with lower temperatures.  The use of Calumite® can also help the glassmaker increasing the extraction of the furnace.
  • Calumite® will reduce blisters and seeds that often appear in the glass when melting raw materials.
